This is the second entry in my 10 hooks in 10 days challenge. I hope you enjoy it. Please leave a comment to let me know if you were hooked or not?

I was 9 years old when my Ma left me at my Granma’s house. I’d got into rouble again and she decided to take me to the farm. She couldn’t handle me, she said. I asked if I’d see Topsy again. She said it wasn’t the same farm.

I stood on Granma’s porch, holding my bag and squinting against the harsh yellow sunlight. The air vibrated with the sounds of insects; flies droning around a wet dog turd on the grass, something loud as a siren in the acacia tree.

“Come on inside, Steven.” Ma leaned out of the door behind me. She had a smile on her mouth but her eyes were green emeralds.

Granma’s house smelled of old people, too many flowers and a layer of roast meat that made my mouth water and my stomach grumble.

“His things are all in the bag.” Ma tapped a pillar of ash from her cigarette with one purple fingernail. The burning end glowed bright orange as she sucked in a big puff of smoke.

I watched the coal glow and fade, the only familiar thing in a house full of old-lady things.

“Bedtime’s at nine, don’t let him watch TV, and don’t let him alone outside for too long.”

That’s all there is in Abandoned for now. If you’d like to find out more about what happens to Steven, please leave a comment here or on Facebook. Thank you for reading!
